Chuck Carpenter? you ask,"Carpenter, a
former U. S. Army wrestling instructor and
carnival wrestler, meets Pete Bartu of Texas
in a thirty-minute match on Friday,
9/ 9. Chuck is being managed by Emil
Ferro and Bill Swager, both prominent
business men of this city."--The Steuben
Republican. [Steuben as in Steuben County,
where Angola IN is located].From the photo, I'd say old Chuck was well
into his forties at the time of this
match--maybe fifty. Because he was a local
boy, the result of his match was actually
reported in the next issue of the
paper--unlike any other match in Angola
history, to the best of my knowledge.

Main issue for me is: According to the
Wilson/Johnson book, in 1955 Kohler lost his DuMont
tv contract, and Barnett split, with Barnett opening
a booking office in Indianapolis. He was soon
partnered with John J. Doyle, the California
promoter who had held Gorgeous George's management
contract. They had tv shows in major markets,
including Chicago IL, Minneapolis, and the west coast.
Now, according to Penny Banner's book, she and
Weaver were living in Indianapolis at the time of
these cards. She mentions a number of other workers
who lived there as well, all working for Barnett.
These included Ray Stevens and Joe Blanchard. So
this is looking to me more like a Barnett group of
wrestlers than a Kohler group. On the other hand,
we also have stars like Gagne and Bruiser and Ellis
and Schmidt. So how does this all fit together?
We're not yet talking A. W. A., here.
